Matrijsmateriaal refers to the substances used in the creation of molds, also known as dies or forms. These molds are essential for manufacturing processes where a desired shape is imparted to a material by pressing or pouring it into the mold cavity. The choice of matrijsmateriaal depends heavily on the specific application, the material being molded, the required precision, durability, and cost considerations.

Common matrijsmaterialen include metals, plastics, and composites. Steel is a widely used metal due to its strength, hardness, and ability to withstand high pressures and temperatures. Different types of steel, such as tool steel and stainless steel, are selected based on factors like corrosion resistance and wear resistance. Aluminum is another metal option, often chosen for its lower cost and lighter weight, making it suitable for lower-volume production or less demanding applications.

For molding plastics, particularly in injection molding, tool steels are frequently employed for their robustness. In applications involving softer materials or lower production runs, materials like epoxy resins, polyurethane, and silicone rubber can be used. These materials are often easier to machine and can be cast into complex shapes. Composites, such as carbon fiber reinforced polymers, are also gaining traction as matrijsmateriaal, offering a high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent thermal properties for specialized applications.
