Maternal-fetal, commonly written as maternal-fetal or maternal–fetal, refers to the relationship and interactions between the mother and developing fetus during pregnancy. The term is used across obstetrics, fetal medicine, and related fields to describe biological processes, clinical care, and research that involve both maternal and fetal health. The maternal-fetal interface centers on the placenta, which mediates the exchange of nutrients, oxygen, and waste between mother and fetus. Its aims are to optimize outcomes for both mother and baby through careful monitoring, diagnostics, and therapeutic interventions. Common concerns include hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes, fetal growth restriction, congenital anomalies, placental complications, multiple gestations, and preterm birth. Diagnostic tools include ultrasound, genetic testing (such as noninvasive prenatal testing), amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling, and fetal monitoring. Management may involve medical treatment, specialized surveillance, or decisions about the timing and mode of delivery.
