Maszkolással

Maszkolással is a term used in Hungary to describe the act of applying a mask or disguise, often for playful or ceremonial purposes. It is commonly associated with folk traditions, particularly during Carnival season, where individuals would don elaborate costumes and masks to portray characters, mythical creatures, or to conceal their identities.

Historically, maszkolással was a way to subvert social norms and hierarchies. By wearing masks, people could temporarily shed their usual roles and engage in behavior that might otherwise be unacceptable. This often involved singing, dancing, and theatrical performances that were part of community celebrations. The masks themselves were often handmade, crafted from wood, leather, or other readily available materials, and decorated with vibrant colors and symbolic imagery.

Beyond Carnival, maszkolással can also refer to less formal instances of disguise, such as children dressing up for games or adults using face paint for entertainment. The underlying theme remains the transformation of identity and the creation of a playful or festive atmosphere through visual alteration.
