MastenTakelage is the complete system of lines, cables, hardware, and fittings that support and operate the masts of a sailing vessel. It is typically divided into standing rigging, which bears the mast’s load and keeps it upright, and running rigging, which is used to hoist and trim sails.

The standing rigging includes the forestay, backstay, and shrouds that connect the mast to the bow, stern, and deck fittings. The running rigging comprises halyards, sheets, reefing lines, and control lines that raise, lower, and adjust sails. Hardware such as turnbuckles, cleats, blocks, and mast fittings enables adjustment and operation. Some vessels also use ratlines and ladders for climbing the rig.

Materials vary by purpose and era. Standing rigging is commonly steel wire, rod, or modern fiber rope; running rigging tends to synthetic fibers such as polyester or HMPE for strength and low stretch. Mast steps, partners, and chainplates transfer loads to the hull.

Maintenance and safety are essential. Regular inspection for corrosion, fraying, kinks, and chafe is required; worn components should be replaced. Proper lubrication of blocks and periodic retensioning of turnbuckles are part of routine care. Rigging work should follow safety procedures, and climbing the rig should be avoided without proper equipment and training.
