Marattia

Marattia is a genus of ferns in the family Marattiaceae, order Marattiales. It comprises large tropical ferns characterized by robust rhizomes and large, evergreen fronds.

Geographic distribution includes tropical Africa, Asia, the Americas, with species commonly inhabiting moist, shaded environments in tropical forests, on the forest floor or on decaying logs and rocks.

Members of Marattia have eusporangiate sporangia, a primitive feature of the group. The fronds range from pinnate to tripinnate and can be extensively large, often with a leathery texture. The sporangia are borne on the undersides of the fronds along the veins, forming sori that are less discrete than in many leptosporangiate ferns.

Life cycle: Like other ferns, Marattia species exhibit alternation of generations, with a photosynthetic sporophyte and a small, short-lived gametophyte that requires water for fertilization.

Taxonomy and systematics: The genus Marattia has undergone substantial revision. In many modern treatments the group is subdivided among related genera within Marattiaceae (for example Ptisana and Eupteris), with Marattia sensu lato used for certain lineages. Because of these changes, species that were once placed in Marattia may be placed in other genera depending on the taxonomic authority.

Ecology and conservation: Marattia species are typically part of tropical forest ecosystems; their large size makes them conspicuous components of the understory. Conservation status varies by species and region, with habitat loss posing threats to many tropical ferns.
