Mangalsutra

Mangalsutra is a traditional necklace worn by married Hindu women as a symbol of marriage. The word combines Sanskrit mangala (auspicious) and sutra (thread), reflecting its origin as a sacred thread of blessing. It is typically given by a husband to his wife during the wedding ceremony and serves as a public sign of the couple’s status. The design and details of the mangalsutra vary widely by region and community.

The conventional form consists of a gold chain interspersed with black beads, and often a central pendant. In many South Indian traditions, the pendant and chain have distinctive motifs and a specific bead count, while in other regions the necklace may be simpler or incorporate additional gemstones. The pendant, sometimes called maangalyam or thaali in Tamil contexts, may bear sacred symbols, such as om or shankha, and is considered an auspicious focal point of the jewelry.

Cultural significance and practice vary regionally. Typically, the mangalsutra is worn daily as a sign of marital commitment and is sometimes worn under clothing in conservative households. Black beads are traditionally believed to protect the marriage from negative influence or the evil eye. In some communities, the practice of wearing the mangalsutra may be adjusted after events such as widowhood, while in others it remains a lifelong symbol of marriage.

Modern trends have expanded mangalsutra designs beyond traditional gold and black beads to include diamond or gemstone pendants, alternative bead colors, and fashion-oriented styles. Despite these variations, the mangalsutra remains a prominent cultural symbol of marriage in many Indian communities.
