Mammografiaan

Mammografiaan is a Finnish term referring to mammography, a type of medical imaging that uses low-dose X-rays to examine breast tissue. It is primarily used as a screening tool to detect breast cancer in its early stages, often before symptoms become apparent. Mammography can also be used diagnostically to investigate a specific breast abnormality or symptom.

The procedure involves a radiographer placing the breast between two plates and compressing it firmly for a short period. This compression allows for a clearer image and reduces the amount of radiation needed. Images are taken from different angles. While some discomfort or a brief pinching sensation is common during the compression, the process itself is usually quick.

Mammography is a crucial component of breast cancer screening programs in many countries. Regular screenings are recommended for women within certain age groups, typically starting between the ages of 40 and 50, with the frequency determined by individual risk factors and healthcare guidelines. The detection of abnormalities on a mammogram may lead to further investigations, such as ultrasound or biopsy, to confirm or rule out cancer. While mammography is a valuable tool, it is not foolproof and can sometimes produce false positives or false negatives.
