Mallampatiluokituksella

Mallampatiluokituksella is a medical classification system used to assess the anatomy of the upper airway, specifically the oropharyngeal space. This classification is important in predicting the difficulty of endotracheal intubation, a procedure where a tube is inserted into the trachea to facilitate breathing. The Mallampati score is determined by visually inspecting the patient's mouth in a seated position, with the tongue protruded maximally and without phonation.

The classification ranges from Class I to Class IV. In Class I, the soft palate, fauces, uvula, and anterior and posterior tonsillar pillars are all clearly visible. Class II shows the soft palate, fauces, and uvula, but the tonsillar pillars are partially obscured by the tongue. Class III involves the soft palate, fauces, and base of the uvula, with the uvula being visible but its base not fully seen due to the tongue. In Class IV, only the hard palate is visible, indicating the tongue significantly obstructs the view of the oropharyngeal structures.

A higher Mallampati score (Class III or IV) generally suggests a more difficult intubation due to limited visualization of the vocal cords. While it is a useful screening tool, it is not the sole determinant of intubation difficulty, and other factors such as neck mobility, thyromental distance, and patient obesity also play a role. The Mallampati classification was developed by Dr. Seshagiri Mallampati in 1985.
