The typical infrastructure comprises a payment gateway, a payment processor, and a merchant acquiring bank, with the issuer bank approving the payment.

A transaction flow generally involves the customer entering payment details, the gateway securely transmitting data to the processor, the processor routing the request to the issuer for authorization, and, upon approval, funds being settled to the merchant through the acquirer. Security measures such as tokenization, PCI-DSS compliance and 3-D Secure authentication are used to protect data and reduce fraud.

Payment solutions are integrated into e-commerce platforms, point-of-sale systems or mobile apps, often via software development kits or APIs. They support multiple channels and payment methods, including recurring payments and digital wallets.

Regulatory and security considerations include payment card industry standards, and, in the European Union, PSD2 and Strong Customer Authentication requirements that influence how payments are authenticated and initiated. Open banking APIs and real-time payments are shaping faster settlement and broader payment acceptance.

Market players range from payment service providers (PSPs) to banks and fintechs. Common examples of PSPs include Stripe, Adyen, Mollie and PayPal, though regional providers are also prevalent. Organizations must balance integration effort, cost, and compliance with the benefits of expanded payment acceptance and improved checkout experience.
