Maastikuvõistlused

Maastikuvõistlused, often translated as cross-country competitions or simply "maastik" in Estonian sporting contexts, refer to a variety of outdoor sports events held over natural terrain. These events emphasize endurance, navigation, and adaptability to varying environmental conditions. The term encompasses a broad range of disciplines, with the most common being cross-country running, cross-country skiing, and equestrian cross-country.

Cross-country running involves participants racing over a course marked out in fields, woods, and sometimes hills, typically on unpaved surfaces. It tests a runner's ability to handle uneven ground, inclines, and descents. Cross-country skiing, a discipline within the sport of skiing, involves traversing natural snowy terrain, often including ascents and descents. It requires significant stamina and technical skill in skiing. Equestrian cross-country, a phase of eventing in horse sports, sees horse and rider teams navigating a challenging course of natural obstacles such as ditches, logs, and water jumps.

The common thread in all maastikuvõistlused is the engagement with the natural landscape as both a venue and an inherent challenge. These competitions are popular in Estonia and other countries with diverse natural environments, often attracting participants of varying skill levels, from amateur enthusiasts to elite athletes.
