Maaperäkuivuus, known in English as soil drought or soil moisture deficit, refers to a condition where the amount of water available in the soil is significantly reduced, hindering plant growth and ecosystem function. It is a critical aspect of drought that directly impacts terrestrial life. Unlike atmospheric drought, which focuses on the lack of precipitation, soil drought specifically addresses the water content within the soil profile.

The severity of soil drought is determined by factors such as the soil's texture, structure, organic matter content, and the rate of water loss through evaporation and transpiration. Sandy soils, with their larger pore spaces, tend to drain more quickly and can experience soil drought more rapidly than clayey soils, which retain more water. Prolonged periods of low rainfall, combined with high temperatures and windy conditions, exacerbate soil moisture depletion.

Consequences of soil drought are far-reaching. For agriculture, it leads to reduced crop yields, potential crop failure, and increased irrigation demands. Natural ecosystems suffer as well, with increased risk of wildfires, stress on vegetation leading to dieback, and impacts on wildlife populations that rely on soil moisture for their habitats and water sources. Changes in soil microbial activity and nutrient cycling are also observed.
