MASH1
MASH1, also known as ASCL1 (achaete-scute homolog 1), is a member of the basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor family. In mammals, Mash1 was identified in mice and is the ortholog of the Drosophila achaete-scute genes. It is expressed in neural progenitor cells during embryonic development and plays a key role in initiating neuronal differentiation.
As a proneural regulator, Mash1 promotes commitment to the neuronal lineage and activates transcriptional programs that
Genetic studies in mice show that loss of Mash1 reduces production of specific neuron populations and alters
Nomenclature note: MASH1 is an older name used in some literature; ASCL1 is the current standard gene
