Achaetescute is commonly a misspelling or concatenation of the term achaete-scute complex, a well-established genetic locus in Drosophila melanogaster. The standard spelling uses a hyphen and separates the two proneural genes achaete and scute, which together with additional components regulate neural precursor formation and the development of sensory bristles.

The achaete-scute complex (AS-C) encodes basic helix-loop-helix transcription factors that promote the selection of sensory organ precursor cells from epithelial cells during larval development.
