MARsta

MARsta is a proposed international concept for a modular Mars surface outpost intended to support sustained robotic and human presence on the planet and to demonstrate closed-loop life support, habitat technology, and in-situ resource utilization. The name is commonly treated as an acronym for Mars Autonomous Research and Surface Station, though usage varies between planning documents and speculative scenarios. The concept appears in space policy studies and engineering white papers as a framework for early surface exploration and technology demonstration.

Design and architecture of MARsta envision a modular habitat consisting of interconnected units for living quarters, a laboratory, a environmental control and life support system, and a logistics and power module. Core capabilities include regenerative life support, reliability-enhanced communications, and mobility systems such as air-locked rovers and station-maintained surface vehicles. Power is planned from solar arrays supplemented by energy storage, with ongoing research into small nuclear reactor prototypes for extended duty cycles. In-situ resource utilization is a central objective, including processing of regolith for materials and potential extraction of atmospheric gases to support life support and propellant production.

Operations concept envisages a near-equatorial or mid-latitude site with initial uncrewed precursor missions, followed by crewed stays of several months. The habitat would operate with autonomous systems handling routine tasks, while science teams would conduct geology, mineralogy, climate history, and astrobiology investigations.
