Lähuspolümerisatsioon

Lähuspolümerisatsioon, known in English as *contact polymerization* or *nearest-neighbor polymerization*, refers to a specialized polymerization mechanism where monomer units undergo chain growth primarily through interactions with adjacent or nearby polymer chains rather than through traditional free-radical, ionic, or enzymatic pathways. This process is particularly relevant in certain synthetic and biological systems, though it remains less studied compared to conventional polymerization methods.

In this mechanism, monomers or oligomers are activated by direct contact with a growing polymer chain, often facilitated by physical proximity rather than chemical initiators. The reaction typically occurs at interfaces, such as in thin films, emulsions, or confined spaces, where monomers are constrained near an active site. This can lead to unique structural properties, such as controlled chain length, branching, or cross-linking, depending on reaction conditions.

Lähuspolümerisatsioon is observed in some biological systems, such as the formation of extracellular matrices or certain synthetic polymer networks where spatial constraints play a critical role. In materials science, it may contribute to the formation of ordered polymer structures, including block copolymers or hybrid materials where phase separation occurs under confined conditions.
