Lushan

Lushan, also known as Mount Lu, is a mountain massif in Jiangxi Province, China, located west of Jiujiang. The range features steep granite cliffs, a network of streams and waterfalls, and a subtropical montane climate. Elevations exceed 1,400 meters, and the landscape includes deep gorges, terraces, and cloud-shrouded ridges. The area hosts diverse flora, including evergreen broadleaf forests, as well as fauna such as macaques and a variety of birds.

The site has a long cultural history dating back to ancient dynasties, and it has long been a retreat for scholars, poets, and officials who built temples, pavilions, and gardens along the slopes. The cultural landscape and religious sites contributed to the area’s renown in Chinese history. In modern times, Lushan is remembered for the Lushan Conference held there in 1959-1960, a pivotal political meeting within the Chinese Communist Party that influenced policy directions in the early PRC era.

Today Lushan is protected as a national scenic area and forms part of Jiangxi's network of protected natural and cultural sites. It remains a popular destination for hiking, sightseeing, and cultural tourism, with trails leading to viewpoints overlooking valleys and rivers, and to historic temples and pavilions scattered across the mountain. Visitors commonly experience misty mornings, cool highland air, and seasonal changes in flora and scenery.

Access is through Jiujiang, with roads and seasonal shuttle services linking the town to trailheads and scenic spots.
