Lumnezia

Lumnezia is a genus of small, brightly colored frogs belonging to the family Craugastoridae. These amphibians are native to the cloud forests and montane regions of the Andes Mountains in South America, primarily found in Peru and Ecuador. The genus was described in 2012, and since then, several species have been identified.

These frogs are characterized by their diminutive size, with most species measuring less than 3 centimeters in length. They exhibit a remarkable diversity in coloration, often featuring vibrant patterns of red, orange, yellow, and green, which are thought to serve as aposematic signals, warning predators of their toxicity. Their skin can also be somewhat granular.

Lumnezia frogs are terrestrial and are typically found in leaf litter, on mossy branches, or near small streams within their humid forest habitats. They are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day. Their diet consists mainly of small invertebrates such as insects and mites. Reproduction in Lumnezia is direct, meaning there is no free-swimming tadpole stage; young hatch from eggs as fully formed miniature frogs.

Conservation concerns exist for several Lumnezia species due to habitat loss and fragmentation caused by deforestation and agricultural expansion in their native Andean range. Further research is ongoing to understand their full distribution, ecological roles, and conservation status.
