One common type is powder snow, which is very light and fluffy, containing a high percentage of air. This is often preferred by skiers and snowboarders for its smooth gliding qualities. Another type is packed snow, which has been compressed by wind or foot traffic, making it denser and firmer. This can be useful for building snow structures like igloos or snow forts.

Wet snow, also known as slush or heavy snow, contains a significant amount of water. It is heavier than powder and can stick to surfaces easily, making it a common cause of power outages due to falling on power lines. Ice pellets, or sleet, are small, translucent balls of ice that form when raindrops freeze as they fall. Graupel, sometimes called soft hail, consists of soft, opaque pellets formed when supercooled water droplets freeze onto a snowflake.
