Snowboarders are athletes and enthusiasts who ride snowboards to travel downhill, perform tricks, or compete in events on snow-covered terrain. A snowboard is strapped to both feet with bindings attached to a snowboard board's top surface. Most riders wear boots integrated with the bindings. Common gear includes a helmet, goggles, gloves, and appropriate outerwear. Snowboarders ride on groomed slopes, in backcountry, or in terrain parks where features like rails and boxes are present. Techniques vary from carving and freestyle to alpine racing.

Origins trace to the 1960s-70s with the snurfer and later the modern snowboard developed in the 1970s-80s; by the 1990s snowboarding grew into a global sport and culture. In 1998 at the Nagano Winter Games, snowboarding was included as an official Olympic sport, and since then has expanded to multiple disciplines, including halfpipe, slopestyle, big air, snowboard cross, and parallel events.

Rider communities include amateurs, professional athletes, and competitive teams. Events are held in national leagues, the X Games, and FIS-sanctioned tours. The International Ski Federation (FIS) governs many competitive disciplines, while national associations organize grassroots participation. Training emphasizes balance, edge control, air awareness, and safety. While injuries are possible, protective equipment and rule-based competition aim to reduce risk.

Snowboarding has influenced youth culture, fashion, and resort entertainment, while continuing to evolve technologically with lighter boards, camber profiles, and customized bindings. Snowboarders pursue a range of paths from recreational riding to high-level competition, contributing to the sport’s global presence.
