Luftaffjedringsanlæg, commonly known as air suspension, is a type of automotive suspension that uses an air spring instead of a traditional coil spring. An air spring is essentially a cylinder containing a piston and an air bladder. When compressed, the air inside the bladder acts as a spring, absorbing shocks and vibrations from the road.

The system consists of several key components: air springs, a compressor, a reservoir tank, height sensors, and a control unit. The compressor draws in ambient air and pressurizes it, storing it in the reservoir tank. Height sensors monitor the vehicle's ride height, and the control unit adjusts the air pressure in the springs based on this data and driver input. This allows for automatic or manual adjustment of the vehicle's ride height and stiffness.

The primary advantages of air suspension include improved ride comfort, as the air springs can be tuned to provide a smoother ride than conventional springs. It also allows for adjustable ride height, which can be beneficial for improving aerodynamics at higher speeds or increasing ground clearance for off-road driving. Furthermore, air suspension can help maintain a consistent ride height regardless of vehicle load, preventing sagging.

Disadvantages can include higher cost and complexity compared to traditional suspension systems. The air springs and associated components can be more susceptible to leaks or mechanical failure over time, potentially leading to more expensive repairs. Maintenance might also be more involved. Despite these potential drawbacks, air suspension is a popular feature in many luxury vehicles and trucks, offering a refined and adaptable suspension experience.
