In practice, luchtsound involves textures that feel transparent and expansive. Characteristics include long reverberation tails, sparse harmonic content, soft attacks, and slow evolutions in timbre and amplitude. Sources often include field recordings of wind, breath, and environmental ambience, sometimes heavily processed to preserve a sense of space rather than foregrounding density or complexity. The emphasis is typically on microdynamics, spatial placement, and the perception of air around and between sounds.

Techniques commonly associated with luchtsound include high-pass emphasis to highlight upper partials, granular or spectrographic processing to thin textures, and careful use of reverb and diffusion to create a sense of airiness.
