Spectrographic refers to the study, measurement, and recording of spectra produced when light interacts with matter, typically through a spectrograph or spectroscopy. The term combines spectro- meaning light or spectrum and -graphic meaning written or recorded. In practice, spectrographic analysis involves dispersing light into its component wavelengths using a dispersive element such as a prism or diffraction grating, and recording the resulting spectrum with a detector, historically a photographic plate and, in modern instruments, a charge-coupled device (CCD) or photodiode array.

The spectrum reveals spectral lines or bands corresponding to electronic transitions in atoms or molecules, or to vibrational-rotational transitions in molecules. The positions (wavelengths) identify elements or compounds, while line intensities provide quantitative information about abundances or concentrations, after calibration. Spectrographic methods are used for qualitative analysis (which elements are present) and quantitative analysis (how much).

Common applications include astronomical spectroscopy to determine composition, temperature, and motion of celestial objects; atomic emission and absorption spectroscopy in chemistry and materials science; environmental monitoring through trace element analysis; and forensic science. Modern spectrographic systems employ high-resolution gratings or echelle configurations, with detectors such as CCDs, and often software for spectral analysis and calibration.
