Luchtniveau

Luchtniveau is a Dutch term that literally means “air level” and is used in different technical contexts to describe the state or height of the air in a given setting. In meteorology and environmental science, it typically refers to the prevailing atmospheric conditions or air quality at a location and time, including factors such as pollutant concentrations, humidity, and temperature. In everyday language, it can denote how clean or polluted the air is.

In air quality monitoring, luchtniveau is associated with measurements of pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10, NO2 and O3. These measurements are often summarized into an air quality index, commonly referred to in Dutch as the Luchtkwaliteitsindex (LKI) or simply as an air quality index (AQI). The index is used to communicate health risks and to guide public advisories and actions, such as limiting outdoor activities during high pollution events.

In aviation and related discourse, luchtniveau is used to indicate altitude, often expressed as a flight level. In this sense, it denotes the vertical position of an aircraft, with higher numbers corresponding to higher altitudes. In formal aviation communication, the term flight level is preferred, but luchtniveau may appear in informal or Dutch-language contexts.

Measurement and interpretation of luchtniveau rely on standardized procedures and instruments, including ground-based stations and sometimes satellite data for air quality, as well as altimeters and standard-pressure-based references for aviation altitude.
