Luchtgeweren, also known as airguns, are firearms that propel projectiles through the air using compressed air or gas. Unlike conventional firearms that use combustion, airguns rely on a mechanical system to store and release energy. This energy is typically generated by a spring mechanism, a pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) system, or a CO2 cartridge.

The projectiles used in airguns are commonly called pellets or BBs. Pellets are typically made of lead or lead alloys and come in various shapes and sizes, designed for specific purposes like target shooting or pest control. BBs are usually spherical and made of steel, often used in less powerful airguns for recreational shooting.

Airguns vary significantly in power and design. Spring-piston airguns are a common type, where cocking the rifle compresses a spring. When the trigger is pulled, the spring is released, pushing a piston forward and compressing air behind the pellet. PCP airguns use a reservoir of highly compressed air that can be refilled from a pump or scuba tank, offering consistent power and a smoother shooting experience. CO2-powered airguns utilize disposable CO2 cartridges to propel the projectile.

The legal status and regulations surrounding airguns differ by country and region. In many places, airguns are regulated differently from conventional firearms, often with less stringent licensing requirements, especially for lower-powered models. However, specific laws regarding purchase, possession, and use can still apply. Safety is paramount when using any airgun, and proper training, protective eyewear, and responsible handling are always advised.
