Lopukha

Lopukha is a term of Russian origin that generally refers to burdock, a plant belonging to the genus Arctium. Burdock is a biennial plant known for its large, coarse leaves and prickly flower heads that readily attach to fur and clothing, aiding in seed dispersal. There are several species within the Arctium genus, including Arctium lappa, Arctium minus, and Arctium tomentosum, all of which may be referred to as Lopukha in a Russian context.

Historically, burdock has been used in traditional medicine and as a food source in various cultures. The root, leaves, and seeds have been utilized for their perceived medicinal properties, though scientific evidence for many of these uses varies. In some regions, burdock root is consumed as a vegetable, often prepared by boiling, roasting, or frying. The plant's distinctive burrs have also inspired inventions, most notably the hook-and-loop fastener system, Velcro, which was developed by Swiss engineer George de Mestral after observing how burrs clung to his dog's fur. The word Lopukha itself is closely associated with the plant in Russian folklore and everyday language.
