Longdrinks

Longdrinks are mixed beverages served in tall glasses, typically combining a base spirit with a relatively large amount of non-alcoholic mixer. The term emphasizes length and refreshment, producing a lighter, more session-friendly drink than many cocktails. In bartending, such drinks are often classified as highballs, which share the same basic approach but are described by technique and glassware.

A longdrink generally features a base spirit—such as gin, vodka, rum, tequila, or whiskey—paired with a non-alcoholic mixer like tonic, soda, juice, or cola. It is usually built over ice in a highball or Collins glass and may be garnished with a citrus twist or herb. Common examples include gin and tonic, vodka with orange juice or cranberry juice, rum and cola, and whiskey with ginger ale or soda. Proportions favor the mixer, resulting in a lower overall alcohol content compared with many cocktails.

Variations exist across menus and regions. Some longdrinks are non-alcoholic, using fruit juices and sodas to create refreshing options. In some markets, they include pre-mixed bottled beverages marketed as longdrinks. Despite differences in recipe or presentation, the defining features are a base spirit, a generous mixer, and service in a tall glass over ice, designed for extended drinking rather than concentrated flavor.
