Lisääntymiskaarautuminen, also known as reproductive torsion, is a medical condition where an ovary or fallopian tube twists around its supporting ligaments. This twisting can cut off the blood supply to the affected organ, leading to severe pain and potentially tissue damage if not treated promptly. It is a surgical emergency.

The condition is most common in women of reproductive age, particularly those with ovarian cysts or masses, as these can increase the weight and size of the ovary, making it more prone to twisting. Other risk factors include previous pelvic surgery or conditions that cause the fallopian tubes or ovaries to be abnormally mobile.

Symptoms of reproductive torsion typically include sudden, severe pain in one side of the lower abdomen, often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. The pain can be intermittent or constant. Pelvic examination may reveal tenderness, and ultrasound imaging is crucial for diagnosis, often showing a swollen ovary with reduced blood flow.

Treatment for reproductive torsion is almost always surgical. Laparoscopic surgery is usually the preferred method, allowing surgeons to untwist the ovary or fallopian tube and restore blood flow. If the tissue is viable, it is preserved. However, if the organ has suffered irreversible damage due to prolonged lack of blood supply, it may need to be removed. Early diagnosis and intervention are key to preserving ovarian function and fertility.
