Lipázinhibitor

Lipázinhibitor, also known as lipase inhibitors, are a class of drugs that prevent the breakdown and absorption of dietary fats. They work by inhibiting the activity of lipases, enzymes primarily produced by the pancreas and small intestine that are responsible for hydrolyzing triglycerides into fatty acids and monoglycerides, which can then be absorbed by the body.

The main therapeutic application of lipase inhibitors is in the management of obesity. By reducing fat absorption, they can lead to a caloric deficit, promoting weight loss. Orlistat is the most well-known and widely prescribed lipase inhibitor. It is available both as a prescription medication and as an over-the-counter drug. Other lipase inhibitors have been developed but have faced regulatory hurdles or have been withdrawn from the market due to safety concerns.

While effective in aiding weight loss, lipase inhibitors are not without side effects. Common gastrointestinal side effects include oily stools, flatulence, fecal urgency, and fecal incontinence. These are generally related to the unabsorbed fat passing through the digestive system. Due to reduced absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), patients taking lipase inhibitors are often advised to take a multivitamin supplement. Lipase inhibitors are typically recommended as part of a comprehensive weight management program that includes a calorie-controlled diet and regular exercise. They are not a magic bullet for weight loss and require lifestyle changes for optimal results.
