Lipoplasty

Lipoplasty, commonly known as liposuction, is a surgical procedure that uses suction to remove excess fat from specific areas of the body. It is considered a cosmetic procedure aimed at improving body contour rather than a weight-loss treatment. The areas most commonly treated include the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, and arms.

The procedure typically involves making small incisions through which a thin, hollow tube called a cannula is inserted. This cannula is connected to a vacuum device, which is used to break up and suction out the fat deposits. Various techniques exist, including tumescent liposuction, where a solution of saline, a local anesthetic, and epinephrine is injected into the fatty tissue before removal, which helps to numb the area, reduce bleeding, and make fat removal easier. Other methods like ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) and laser-assisted liposuction (LAL) use energy to liquefy fat before suctioning.

Lipoplasty is usually performed under local or general anesthesia. Recovery time varies depending on the extent of the procedure, but most patients experience swelling and bruising, requiring a compression garment for several weeks. While effective for body contouring, potential risks include infection, bleeding, fluid accumulation, and uneven results. It is important to consult with a qualified surgeon to determine if lipoplasty is a suitable option.
