Lipidfelhalmozódás, also known as lipid accumulation or steatosis, refers to the excessive buildup of lipids or fats within cells. This process can occur in various tissues and organs throughout the body, with the liver being a common site. When lipids accumulate in liver cells, it is termed hepatic steatosis or fatty liver disease.

The accumulation of lipids can be caused by several factors, including an imbalance between lipid synthesis and degradation, increased uptake of fatty acids, or impaired export of triglycerides from cells. Nutritional factors play a significant role; excessive caloric intake, particularly from fats and carbohydrates, can overwhelm the metabolic capacity of cells, leading to lipid storage. Other contributing factors include insulin resistance, which is often associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes, as well as alcohol consumption, certain medications, and genetic predispositions.

In many cases, mild lipidfelhalmozódás may not cause noticeable symptoms and can be reversible with lifestyle changes, such as improved diet and increased physical activity. However, persistent or severe accumulation can lead to cellular dysfunction, inflammation, and eventually fibrosis or cirrhosis in organs like the liver. This can impair organ function and increase the risk of serious health complications. Diagnosis typically involves imaging techniques, blood tests to assess liver function, and sometimes a biopsy. Management focuses on addressing the underlying causes and promoting a healthier lifestyle.
