Liocranidae

Liocranidae is a family of araneomorph spiders commonly known as false sac spiders. These spiders are characterized by their relatively small size, typically ranging from 3 to 12 millimeters in length, and their color, which is often pale brown, yellowish, or grayish. They possess eight eyes arranged in two rows, and their chelicerae are robust. Liocranids are found worldwide, inhabiting a variety of environments from leaf litter and undergrowth to more open habitats.

These spiders are generally nocturnal hunters, actively foraging for small insects and other arthropods. They do not build capture webs but instead rely on their speed and stealth to ambush prey. During the day, they retreat to sheltered locations, often constructing silken sacs in which they rest and molt. These sacs are typically found under bark, stones, or in leaf litter. Liocranidae includes several genera, with some of the more well-known being Liocranum, Agroeca, and Scotolathys. While generally considered harmless to humans, their bite can cause mild local irritation in some individuals. Their ecological role involves the control of small invertebrate populations within their respective habitats.
