Linoleikkaus

Linoleikkaus is a printmaking technique. It involves carving an image into a block of linoleum. Linoleum is a relatively soft material, making it easier to carve than wood. The artist uses sharp tools to cut away the areas that will not receive ink. The raised surface of the linoleum block then holds the ink.

Once the carving is complete, ink is applied to the raised surface with a roller, called a brayer. Paper is then placed on top of the inked linoleum block. Pressure is applied to transfer the ink from the linoleum to the paper, creating a print. This process can be repeated to create multiple identical impressions.

Linoleikkaus differs from woodcut because linoleum is a homogenous material without a grain. This allows for smoother lines and softer tones, and the ability to carve in any direction. It gained popularity in the early 20th century, particularly with artists like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, who found it a versatile and accessible medium for their artistic experimentation. It is often used for both fine art prints and commercial applications.
