The term covers a wide range of locations, from indoor arenas and gyms to outdoor tracks, fields, and specialized courts. In Finland, liikuntatilat are often part of municipal sports districts and are used by schools, local clubs, and the general public.

A typical indoor liikuntatilat includes a multi‑sport hall that can accommodate handball, basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics. Many of these halls are equipped with adjustable flooring and proper lighting to meet different sports’ requirements.
