Liigitaseme

Liigitaseme is a term used in biology and Estonian scientific writing to refer to the species level of biological classification. It concerns how populations are grouped into species, the basic units of taxonomy, and how boundaries between species are determined. The concept encompasses both the idea of what constitutes a species and the practical process of delimiting species in nature.

In taxonomy, species delimitation relies on various species concepts, and there is no single universally accepted definition. The biological species concept emphasizes reproductive isolation, while morphological or phenetic concepts rely on similarities and differences in form and structure. Phylogenetic or lineage-based concepts define species as separately evolving lineages with distinct genetic histories.
