Lewica

Lewica is the Polish term for left-wing politics. It is used as a general description of political movements and ideologies positioned to the left of the political spectrum, and it is also the name of a specific left-wing electoral alliance formed in Poland in 2021 by parties such as the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), Wiosna, and Razem. The alliance aimed to unite different strands of left-wing thought for national and European elections.

Ideologies associated with the left typically emphasize social equality, expanded welfare provisions, progressive taxation, labor rights, civil liberties, and equal access to public services such as health care and education. Within the broad left, there are varieties ranging from social democracy and democratic socialism, which seek reform within the existing system, to more radical currents that advocate deeper structural changes or critique capitalism more directly. Left movements may differ on questions of economic strategy, the role of the state in the economy, and the balance between individual rights and collective welfare.

In Poland, Lewica represents a progressive, pro-European stance that often prioritizes social justice, climate policy, secular governance, and inclusive policies. The term also reflects a wider international family of left-wing groups, encompassing social-democratic, democratic-socialist, and other left-oriented movements, contrasted with right-wing and centrist politics.
