Wiosna

Wiosna is the Polish word for spring, the season that follows winter and precedes summer. In Poland, spring is commonly defined in two ways: meteorological spring, which runs from March 1 to May 31, and astronomical spring, which begins around the vernal equinox in late March and ends with the summer solstice in late June. The season is associated with warming temperatures, melting snow in the northern regions, longer daylight hours, and renewed plant growth and animal activity.

The season is reflected in Polish culture and literature, with references to renewal, growth, and the return of outdoor life. Weather during wiosna can be variable, featuring rain showers, thunderstorms, and fluctuating temperatures as winter conditions recede.

Historically, the term wiosna appears in the phrase Wiosna Ludów, or the Spring of Nations, which denotes a wave of political upheavals across Europe in 1848, including movements for constitutional reforms and national self-determination that affected many territories, including parts of Poland.

In contemporary politics, Wiosna also refers to a political party founded in 2019 by Robert Biedroń. The party promoted progressive, social-liberal policies and, in 2021, merged into a broader left-wing alliance known as Lewica. The name in this context signals the party’s emphasis on renewal and reform, aligning with the broader associations of spring as a time of change.
