Levellointi

Levellointi is a Finnish term that translates to "levelling" or "surveying" in English. It refers to the process of determining the relative height differences between points on the Earth's surface. This is a fundamental practice in geodesy and surveying, crucial for various construction, engineering, and mapping projects.

The primary tool used in levellointi is the levelling instrument, commonly known as a level. This instrument, often a telescope mounted on a tripod, allows surveyors to establish a precise horizontal line of sight. Combined with a graduated staff, also called a levelling rod, the instrument allows for the measurement of vertical distances. The process typically involves setting up the level at an intermediate point, reading the staff held vertically at a known benchmark (a point of established elevation), and then reading the staff at other points. By taking multiple readings and using established mathematical procedures, the elevation of any point can be accurately determined relative to the benchmark.

Different methods of levellointi exist, including direct levelling, trigonometric levelling, and barometric levelling, each with its own accuracy and application. Direct levelling, using a spirit level and staff, is generally the most accurate for determining small elevation differences over short distances.
