Lesioni

Lesioni are abnormal tissue changes that result from injury, disease, or degeneration. In medical usage, the term can describe effects in skin, organs, nerves, or other tissues and may be localized or diffuse. Descriptions focus on location, extent, morphology, and underlying cause.

Classification of lesioni is broad. They can be categorized by tissue type (cutaneous, mucosal, visceral) and by pathophysiology (traumatic, inflammatory, infectious, neoplastic, ischemic, degenerative, congenital). Lesioni may be acute or chronic and can range from minor disruptions such as abrasions to major organ damage.

Common examples include cutaneous lesions such as macules, papules, vesicles, ulcers, scars, plaques, and nodules. Deeper lesions may involve hematomas, cysts, tumors, or necrotic areas. The term lesion is distinct from wounds or scars, though these concepts can overlap in clinical assessment.

Diagnosis of lesioni relies on history and physical examination, supplemented by imaging (ultrasound, CT, MRI), endoscopy where appropriate, and laboratory tests. Histopathological examination or biopsy is often required to determine etiology, malignant potential, or to guide management.

Management and prognosis depend on the underlying cause and the tissue involved. Treatment targets healing of the tissue, control of infection or inflammation, and removal or treatment of underlying disease when needed. Prognosis varies widely with etiology, location, and timeliness of intervention.
