The only known species in this genus is Lepidocybium flavobrunneum, commonly known as the longfin escolar. This species is found in tropical and warm-temperate waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. It is a pelagic and oceanic species, typically inhabiting depths ranging from 200 to 800 meters. The longfin escolar is characterized by its elongated, compressed body, large eyes, and the distinctive long dorsal and anal fins that give it its common name. Its coloration is generally a dark brown or black.
