Lenksäule

Lenksäule is the German term for the steering column of a vehicle. It is a crucial component of the steering system, connecting the steering wheel to the steering mechanism, which ultimately directs the vehicle's wheels. The primary function of the Lenksäule is to transmit the rotational motion from the driver's hands on the steering wheel to the steering gear.

Modern Lenksäule designs incorporate several features for safety and comfort. Many are equipped with a collapsible mechanism, designed to absorb impact energy in the event of a frontal collision and prevent severe injury to the driver. Adjustability is another common feature, allowing drivers to position the steering wheel closer to or farther from their body, and sometimes also to tilt it up or down, to achieve an optimal driving posture.

The Lenksäule also often houses various controls for the vehicle, such as turn signal levers, windshield wiper controls, and sometimes ignition switches or push-button start systems. In vehicles with airbags, the driver's airbag is typically integrated into the steering wheel, which is directly attached to the Lenksäule.
