Legvatnsástungi, also known as amniotic fluid embolism, is a rare and life-threatening complication of pregnancy characterized by the sudden entry of amniotic fluid into the maternal circulation. This fluid, which surrounds the fetus during pregnancy, can contain fetal cells, hair, and other debris. When these substances enter the mother's bloodstream, they can trigger a severe allergic-like reaction.

The exact cause of legvatnsástungi is not fully understood, but it is thought to occur when there is a tear in the amniotic sac or uterine lining, allowing amniotic fluid to pass into maternal veins. Risk factors include advanced maternal age, difficult labor, uterine rupture, and certain placental abnormalities. The condition typically presents abruptly during labor or delivery, but can also occur during pregnancy or immediately postpartum.

Symptoms of legvatnsástungi can vary but often include sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, hypotension (low blood pressure), rapid heart rate, and altered mental status. It can rapidly progress to cardiopulmonary arrest, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and shock. Fetal distress is also a common occurrence.

Diagnosis is often made clinically based on the rapid onset of symptoms during pregnancy or labor. There is no definitive diagnostic test for legvatnsástungi, but medical professionals may look for evidence of amniotic fluid components in maternal blood samples or sputum. Management is primarily supportive, focusing on stabilizing the mother's vital signs, providing oxygen, administering fluids, and managing any bleeding complications. Prompt delivery of the fetus is often indicated. The mortality rate for legvatnsástungi is high, and survivors may experience significant neurological deficits.
