Legolas

Legolas, commonly known as Legolas Greenleaf, is a fictional elf in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium. He hails from the Woodland Realm of Mirkwood and is the son of King Thranduil. A Sindarin elf renowned for his archery, Legolas possesses keen eyesight, swift movement, and exceptional endurance. The epithet Greenleaf is often attached to his name, reflecting his forest-dwelling heritage.

He is a member of the Fellowship of the Ring, formed to destroy the One Ring. Alongside Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Aragorn, Gandalf, Boromir, Gimli the Dwarf, and the hobbits Merry and Pippin, Legolas undertakes the quest to Mount Doom. He is notable for his archery, agility, and long-range reconnaissance. Legolas forges a famous friendship with Gimli the Dwarf, an alliance that endures their long journey and has become a symbol of cooperation between their peoples. He participates in major campaigns of the War of the Ring, including battles at Helm’s Deep and the Pelennor Fields, and aids in the pursuit of the orcs who captured Merry and Pippin.

After the war, Legolas and Gimli travel together across Middle-earth and are said to have sailed to the Undying Lands. In film adaptations, the character is portrayed by Orlando Bloom in Peter Jackson’s movie series, where his archery, sight, and combat skill are highlighted and his companionship with Gimli is a central element.
