Gandalf is a fictional character in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium. He is one of the Istari, an order of wizards sent by the Valar to aid the Free Peoples in their struggle against Sauron. In Tolkien's legendarium, Gandalf is a Maia spirit named Olórin, associated with wisdom and mercy.
