Legalrational, often referred to as legal-rational authority, is a concept in sociology and political science describing a form of legitimacy grounded in a system of codified laws, rules, and procedures. It emphasizes authority vested in appointed offices rather than in individual leaders, with rules that are intended to apply impersonally and universally within the organizational or state structure. The term is closely associated with Max Weber, who identified legal-rational authority as one of the three ideal types of legitimate rule, alongside traditional and charismatic authority. The legitimacy of legalrational authority rests on belief in the legality of enacted rules and the rational procedures used to apply them.

Key features include the formalization of offices through written statutes or reglements, hierarchical organization, impersonal and rule-based decision making, and officials selected or promoted according to defined qualifications. Authority is exercised by those occupying offices, and successors inherit the authority by occupying the same offices, rather than by personal charisma or lineage. Decisions are guided by codified law and standardized procedures, with formal mechanisms for accountability such as courts, audits, and administrative appeals.

In practice, legalrational authority underpins modern bureaucratic states, constitutional democracies, and large organizations, including courts, legislatures, regulatory agencies, and government ministries. It aims to ensure predictability, uniformity, and accountability, though it can also lead to rigidity, proceduralism, or impersonality if overemphasized. Critics note that even within legal-rational systems, power can become technically concentrated or legitimated by additional sources of authority, such as political leadership or public legitimacy.
