Lederprodukten, commonly known as leather products, are goods manufactured from animal hides that have been tanned and finished to create durable, flexible material. They range from clothing, footwear, and bags to furniture upholstery and automotive interiors. The raw material typically comes from cattle, but hides from sheep, goats, pigs, and exotic species are also used.

Processing includes cleaning, preserving, tanning, dyeing, and surface finishing. Tanning stabilizes collagen and makes leather resistant to decay. Leather is categorized by surface characteristics: full-grain preserves the natural grain; top-grain has the outer layer shaved; corrected-grain is embossed to appear uniform; suede and nubuck have a soft nap; patent leather is coated for gloss.

Tanning methods vary: vegetable tanning uses tannins from plants; chrome tanning relies on chromium salts; other methods include aldehyde and oil tanning. Vegetable-tanned hides are valued for patina and biodegradability; chrome-tanned hides are typically more uniform and supple.

Environmental and ethical considerations accompany leather production. Chrome tanning can raise concerns about chemical effluents; water and energy use varies by process. Hides are a by-product of meat production, and some producers source from certified, sustainable supply chains; there is growing interest in low-impact tanning and in opting for leather alternatives.

Care and maintenance: clean with a soft cloth, avoid excessive moisture, condition leather periodically, and store away from heat and direct sunlight. Proper care extends life and preserves appearance.

Quality and durability depend on hide quality, proper tanning, finishing, and stitching. Leather products can offer long service lives with repair and resale options, contributing to a circular economy.
