LayoutTyp

LayoutTyp is a design methodology used to structure page layouts primarily around typography. It treats text blocks, headlines, captions, and quotes as interchangeable layout elements organized by a baseline grid and a typographic scale. The approach focuses on rhythm, measure, and readability, arranging content so that typographic decisions drive the placement and sizing of columns, margins, and gutters rather than relying solely on image-centric layouts.

Core concepts include modular typographic units, a baseline grid to align lines of text, a scalable typographic system (tokens for font sizes, line heights, and margins), and responsive rules that adjust line length, measure, and emphasis across screen sizes. In digital workflows, LayoutTyp is typically implemented with design tokens and CSS variables to maintain consistency across components, while in print it informs column proportions, lead, and trim.

The concept emphasizes accessibility by prioritizing readable measure (approximately 45-75 characters per line on web) and sufficient contrast, as well as predictable reading order. LayoutTyp is not a formal standard but a practical framework used by editorial designers, web designers, and publishers to ensure typographic coherence across multi-page or multi-device layouts.
