Lastu

Lastu refers to a Finnish folk art tradition involving thin shavings of wood, typically birch or pine, which are then curled, shaped, and woven to create decorative items. These creations can range from small ornaments and jewelry to larger decorative objects and even functional items like baskets. The practice is rooted in a history of utilizing readily available natural materials for artistic expression and often involves a meticulous and time-consuming process of preparing the wood and meticulously manipulating the shavings.

The technique requires significant skill and patience, as the wood shavings are often only a millimeter or two thick and must be handled with care to avoid breaking. Traditional methods involve using a sharp knife or specialized tool to peel thin strips from a piece of wood. These strips are then often soaked to make them more pliable before being curled around forms or woven together. Natural dyes or wood stains can be used to add color, though many Lastu creations highlight the natural beauty of the wood itself.

Lastu is most commonly associated with the Finnish cultural heritage and is often seen as a representation of Finnish craftsmanship and connection to nature. While once a more widespread craft, it is now considered a specialized folk art form. Contemporary artists continue to practice and evolve the tradition, creating both historically inspired pieces and modern interpretations of Lastu art.
