Primary duties include setting up and aligning laser equipment, calibrating parameters (power, wavelength, pulse duration), monitoring process stability, performing quality inspections, and troubleshooting equipment. They may also program automated laser workflows, operate beam delivery systems, and maintain optical components such as lenses and mirrors.

Skills and training: typically an associate degree or vocational training in optics, photonics, or engineering technology, sometimes through an apprenticeship. Proficiency in optics, laser safety, metrology, and process control is essential. Familiarity with instrumentation (power meters, interferometers, spectrometers) and software for CAD/CAM or laser control is common. Certifications, such as laser safety officer (LSO) or company-specific credentials, may be required.

Work environment: often on factory floors, laboratories, or cleanrooms. Roles may involve standing for long periods, handling chemicals or lubricants, and wearing eye and skin protection. Safety is a major concern due to potential hazards from laser exposure, fumes, and high voltages.

Standards: practice is guided by national and international standards for laser safety and quality systems, including EN and ISO norms and industry-specific regulations.
