Laponia

Laponia is a cultural and natural landscape in northern Sweden, within the traditional territory of the Sámi people (Sápmi). The area is renowned for its vast wilderness and for the long-standing Sámi practices, especially reindeer herding.

In 1996, Laponia was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding universal value as a landscape where nature and traditional livelihoods have co-evolved.

Geography and components: Laponia covers roughly 9,400 square kilometers in Norrbotten County, spanning parts of Jokkmokk, Gällivare and Arjeplog municipalities. It comprises four national parks—Padjelanta, Sarek, Stora Sjöfallet, and Muddus—and surrounding protected areas that preserve mountain, tundra, river, and forest ecosystems.

Governance and culture: The site is notable for its integration of nature conservation with Sámi customary land use, including semi-nomadic reindeer herding. Management involves the Swedish government and Sámi communities, aiming to sustain both ecological integrity and traditional livelihoods.

Ecology and landscape: The region features a range from alpine mountains and glaciers in the north to boreal forests and wetlands in the south. It supports notable wildlife such as reindeer, wolverines, lynx, and diverse birdlife, and contains important freshwater systems and migratory routes.

Human history: Sámi have inhabited the area for centuries and maintain cultural practices linked to the landscape, including seasonal migration routes and knowledge of the land.

Significance: Laponia is recognized for its outstanding universal value as a cultural landscape where human use and protection of biodiversity are historically intertwined. It illustrates a model of indigenous participation in conservation.
