Sarek

Sarek National Park is a national park in northern Sweden, located in Jokkmokk Municipality in Norrbotten County. It lies within the cultural region of Sapmi and is part of the larger Laponia World Heritage Site, designated for its combined natural and cultural value. The park encompasses a wild, glacier-carved mountain landscape that is considered among the most rugged and remote in Sweden.

Geography and landscape: Sarek contains numerous glaciers, deep river valleys, and a high concentration of unnamed mountain ridges. Much of the terrain is without marked trails or visitor facilities, making travel primarily a backcountry experience. The area is notable for its stream networks and wide alpine plateaus, which attract experienced hikers, mountaineers, and researchers.

Ecology and use: The park protects subarctic to alpine habitats that support a variety of flora and fauna adapted to harsh conditions. Reindeer herding and Sámi cultural traditions are historically associated with the region, and the park lies within areas where traditional livelihoods continue to influence land use. Visitors are expected to follow Sweden’s Allemansrätten, or freedom to roam, with a focus on minimizing impact in this fragile wilderness.

Administration and conservation: Sarek is managed by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency in coordination with regional authorities. As part of the Laponia World Heritage Site, it participates in a protected landscape recognized for its outstanding natural beauty and cultural significance, with strict restrictions on development and motorized access to preserve its wilderness character.
